City trip to Hong Kong with kids, looking forward to it!!

Just one week to go before we leave on our city trip to Hong Kong and I’m looking forward to it so much! I’ve been in Hong Kong 8 years ago for a couple of days when I was travelling to Australia and loved the city with its “east meets west” atmosphere. On one hand you’ll find the tallest skyscrapers and enormous shopping malls and on the other you’ll find the more traditional China. Therefore, a lovely combination!

Off we go!

Friday, the 23rd of February we fly from Amsterdam Schiphol directly to Hong Kong with Cathay Pacific in 12 hours. We hear Cathay has great inflight service for kids so we’re really curious to find out! On our way in we have a day flight and on our way back we fly at night. I’ve been preparing Flo and Lotte for a long flight and I’m always surprised at how much they enjoy flying. They’re really looking forward to this flight. Perhaps the small presents and snacks that I’ve packed for the flight help a bit.

What are we going to do?

There is loads to do in Hong Kong! This Hong Kong travel guide is a real help. Often Hong Kong is a stayover destination as was the case for me 8 years ago. Luckily I had 2 days to spend back then. I loved the city so much I’ve decided to go back now for 9 days, this time with the kids! Especially during this time the Hong Kong climate is perfect, about 20 degrees. The city has a lot to offer and not only to me, but for the kids too!

I may have read about a 100 articles trying to map out the stuff we really need to have done before we get back on the plane to Amsterdam. I’ve asked Kev, Flo and Lotte too. When I asked them “what do you want to do on our city trip to Hong Kong?” Lotte and Flo shouted “seeing Mickey!!!” together. Hence, CHECK, Disneyland is on the list. Kev wants to visit the Tian Tan Buddha, nice!! We haven’t been to Asia in two years so seeing a Buddha seems like a great idea to me.

Aside from that I would really like to take the famous Peak tram to the Peak (I reckon the kids will appreciate this too), spot some rare pink dolphins in real life (second on the kids’ wish list), viewing Hong Kong from the star ferry and, if possible with Kev’s fear of heights, take the Ngong Ping 360 cable car. And, especially relevant, there needs to be time for some serious relaxation of course; lounging at the pool (fingers crossed for good weather), strolling through the city, shopping and sleeping in at least once. Need more inspiration on things to do in Hong Kong for kids?

Our hotels

We’re in Hong Kong for 9 days and I’ve booked 3 different hotels: Dorsett WanchaiHyatt Regency Hong Kong Sha Tin  and of course a Disney Hotel; Disney Explorers Lodge. We’ll spend our first nights in Dorsett Wanchai, a four star hotel which is located smack in the middle of Hong Kong Island and which is well-known for its beautiful and special interior. Hyatt Regency Sha Tin is a luxurious 5 star resort and supposedly very child friendly. We will be relaxing here for a couple of days, enjoying the pool and have the kids participate in all kinds of activities. We’re also very much looking forward to having an extensive lunch in the award-winning restaurant.

The last day of our trip we’ll be sleeping in the Disney Explorer Lodge so we can enjoy Disneyland to the fullest. Sounds good right? On this day we’ll stay in Disneyland until the park closes, after the parade. Our flight leaves at 00.30 hours which is perfect because we can hop into a taxi and leave for the airport after a long and exhausting day of Disneyland with a festive ending. I think (and hope) the kids will sleep through the night so the jetlag won’t last very long when we arrive back in the Netherlands early in the morning.

But first….

We need to pack. And I’ve told myself to do so in time for once, instead of last minute. Do you have any tips for our city trip to Hong Kong? I’d love to hear them! Oh l’m looking forward to it so much!!!
