Our Hong Kong city trip, day 5 & 6: buying souvenirs, swimming and enjoying our suite!

Today we say goodbye to the Dorsett Wanchai Hotel and check in to the Hyatt Regency Sha Tin hotel as we continue our Hong Kong city trip!

Day 5

At day 5 of our Hong Kong city trip the alarm doesn’t go off until 10:00 o’clock, loooooooooove it!! We’re all still fast asleep when it goes off. Yesterday we decided we would go out for a big breakfast after we check out so there was no need to be in time for the hotel breakfast. After we’ve packed all of our stuff in record time we check out and walk to the Brunch & Supper Club to have our breakfast. This turns out to be a great choice! We order the kids a peanut butter sandwich and a cup of tea, Kev orders an omelet with a delicious cappuccino and I go for the scrambled eggs with salmon and spinach with a fresh orange juice.

Shopping for souvenirs

Seeing as we will be staying outside the city for the remainder of our trip we decide to go scavenge for souvenirs. Flo buys a Styrofoam plane and a “real” Chinese dragon, Lotte gets the dragon too and an inflatable band for in the pool. We buy a porcelain “waving cat” ourselves. You gotta love those kitschy souvenirs! You should see our home, we even have seashells from Sanibel Island in a little glass “treasure chest”.

Hyatt Regency Sha Tin

After our shopping spree we take a taxi to our new hotel which is located in the New Territories close to the Chinese University. It’s a really tall building and has more than 500 rooms. We have a suite with 2 bedrooms and the room is huge, such luxury!! The kids and us have separate bedrooms with each their own bathroom and there is a separate sitting room with a little kitchen and a kitchen table. These rooms are rented for long stays too and I can certainly imagine why. The view is amazing too! We look out across the river at all of the apartment buildings in Hong Kong.

The weather is great and the kids get changed quickly so we can head on down to the pool. Time to relax! There’s a separate child’s pool and you can get all kinds of floating toys for the kids to play with. The “warm bath” (Jacuzzi) is popular with the kids too.

After a few hours of swimming we treat ourselves to room service; pizza and fries!

Day 6

The alarm goes off at 08:30 and when we awake Lotte is curled up between us. Rather impressive, she must have done that without any sound last night. Breakfast is extensive and absolutely delicious! They have stuff like pancakes, fried eggs, fruit, vegetables, yoghurt and dim sum but also a simple peanut butter sandwich if you like. We take our time enjoying the breakfast and head on over to Camp Hyatt, the kids club of the hotel. Floris and Lotte make a keychain. Flo really enjoys being creative so he couldn’t be happier. With the help of the Camp Hyatt staff they paint two plastic keychains and to top it all off they get to decorate their own bag in which they can take the keychains with them.

A lovely lunch together, Sha Tin 18

Then it’s time for lunch in one of the 5 restaurants of the hotel: Sha Tin 18. This restaurant serves the Dongguan and North Chinese cuisine and has won multiple awards. When you’ve eaten there you will know exactly why. Wow, that was delicious!!

We start with a dim sum of crab followed by Peking duck. We eat the Peking duck traditionally, starting with the crispy skin with sugar, followed by a juicy piece of breast fillet in a pancake with cucumber and bunching onion, followed by a mixture of breast and leg fillet in a pancake with garlic. It tastes absolutely amazing. The duck is followed up by a vegetable dish and a wok dish with beef. These taste equally good. Finally, for our desert, we have a special pudding with a special berry sauce.

If you were wondering what Flo and Lotte thought of it, not much ;). They had a plate of fries and some vanilla ice cream as desert, everybody happy!

Just a quick swim

We actually want to explore the neighborhood for a bit after our lunch, There is so much to do still: visiting the monastery of the 10.000 Buddha’s, cycling (you can rent these at the hotel) along the river, visiting Tai Po, catching the ferry to one of the islands or paying the monkeys of the Kam Shan Country Park a visit. But after 2.5 hours of sitting still we really need to entertain the kids a little…

So swimming it is! All kinds of tricks are displayed. It’s fun to see Flo is really starting to get around without inflatable armbands after only 10 swimming lessons.

We’ll be checking out tomorrow and after that we’ll be staying our last night in the Disney Hotel before we finally end our Hong Kong city trip. We’ll be enjoying the magical world of Disney for two whole days in Disneyland!
