It may take some time to get there but it’s surely worth it! Picture impressive Mayan temples, add a white Caribbean beach and waving palm trees and you can relax and enjoy a great holiday with the whole family. Colonial cities are hidden in the tropical rain forest and they’re full of wild animals. So Mexico really caters to everyone’s needs: action, culture, nature and relaxation. The travelling mothers of RiksjaKids gladly share their highlights in Mexico with kids.
Highlights in Mexico with kids
#1 Lost temple city Calakmul
Hidden in the tropical rain forest are the jungle temples of Calakmul. The temples are not the only impressive sight, so is the road that leads to them. With a little luck you might spot some jaguars. And for those of you that aren’t as lucky, not to worry, you’ll surely spot some spider monkeys, foxes and toucans. The temples are about 55 meters high and that makes them the highest Mayan-temples of Mexico. Once you’re up there you can look out over the jungle and you can even see El Mirador, a temple in the neighboring country Guatemala. On your way to the temples you’ll pass a bat cave where close to three million bats swarm outside during dusk, a most impressive sight.
#2 Peddling on Blue Lagoon Bacalar
Mexico with kids is not just climbing temples and hiking through the jungle but a little relaxation fits in perfectly well. Be sure to visit Bacalar on the way, check into a nice hotel and enjoy an ice cold Sol. The Bacalar Lagoon is crystal clear and because of the white sand on the bottom the lagoon has an impressive turquoise color. You’re best off exploring the lagoon by kayak with a guide. You’ll navigate past mangroves and watch the sun come up. The lake will change color every minute.
#3 Indiana Jones in the jungle
Palenque is one of the most well-known and therefore crowded Maya ruins. While most people enjoy visiting the smaller cluster of exposed temples we like to venture a little further into the jungle. You’ll spot wildlife and see other, less crowded temples there. OK, so you will have to wade through a few rivers and you may get startled by the roars of howler monkeys but as soon as you arrive at Templo Olvidado (the lost temple) we surely thought it was worth the trouble.
#4 At home with the Mayans
Together with a guide we venture into an authentic Mayan village. Because the guide lives here he can explain everything very well to you and is greeted by everyone! At Guadalupe you can join at the dinner table and learn to make your own tortillas with corn, water and salt. Meanwhile the neighbor is busy weaving hammocks. They sleep in these too because there are no mattresses or beds here. The famous Chichen Itza temple is very near and is certainly worth a visit too.
#5 Caribbean taste
Last but not least you can’t travel through Mexico without discovering the Caribbean beach! Just half an hour by boat, that’s all it takes to get to the pearly beaches of Isla MujeresThere is a laid back ambiance, wavy palm trees and the water is a deep turquoise blue. Here you can look for shells in the surf and enjoy a nice cocktail or two. We went underwater too! During summer you can snorkel with whale sharks… And at night? We enjoyed a beautiful sunset.
