Schiphol with kids: things to do, because there is a lot to do!

Does your holiday start when you’ve reached your destination or does it start sooner? Our holiday starts as soon as the door closes behind us! Floris and Lotte love it at Schiphol Airport. We’ve even taken a few trips there when we weren’t even going on holiday. Before customs there is a lot to do for the kids. But did you know there’s loads of fun stuff to do for the little rascals after customs as well? To make sure your holiday starts at the airport too this year we’ve made a list with things to do at Schiphol with kids:

  1. Your kids become little scientists at NEMO

NEMO? Isn’t that a big science museum in Amsterdam? Yes that’s right! And they have an annexe at Schiphol Airport on the “Holland Boulevard” between lounges 2 and 3. Floris and Lotte can go for a climb or do small “lab tests”. We took a seat and just enjoyed the moment of the kids being able to blow off steam. As far as I’m concerned this is a big hit at Schiphol with kids.

  1. Hugging it out with huge stuffed animals

You’ll find huge stuffed animals at the Holland Boulevard too. I don’t know about your kids but Flo and Lotte absolutely adore stuffed animals (we have a lot of them at home, a bit too many perhaps ;). The kids can clamber, horse around and of course hug it out with the absolutely ENORMOUS stuffed animals.

  1. Fries, burgers or both?

Uhhhm no, this isn’t a very healthy tip, but it is a tasty one :). Our kids aren’t the best eaters but before a long flight I do like to make sure their tummy’s are full so they can have a good sleep on the plane. They enjoy fries of course so we often make a quick stop at McDonalds before we board. If you take a Happy Meal you’re kids will have a fun, small thing to play with on the plane too. You can find the MC on the first floor in the food court of Lounge 2 but there is also one in Lounge 3.

  1. Climbing and clambering on a real plane

Also in Lounge 2 on the first floor (next to the food court = extra convenient) is a climbing frame in the shape of a real airplane. Here the kids can blow off some steam just before they get cooped up in a narrow steel tube for several hours.

  1. M&M’s, M&M’s en more M&M’s

It might not be the best idea to feed your kids loads of sugar before they get on a plane but it doesn’t hurt to take a look does it? And this can be a lot of fun at the M&M Shop. Everywhere you look you can see, you’ve guessed it, M&M’s. It’s a wondrous, colourful experience and something the kids will surely appreciate. If the kids are old enough to eat M&M’s it might be a good idea to buy a little something for when you arrive at your destination.

So you see there is loads to do at Schiphol with kids. And did you know there is a lot to do for you, the adults, too? What do you think of paying a visit to the very first “Starbuck Evenings” at an airport in Europe? You will find this special Starbucks on the balcony of Lounge 2 and next to ordering a lovely macchiato there you can order a set of small side dishes too. Or do you enjoy “relaxing” before a flight? Why don’t you see if a spot is available in one of the “hidden relax areas”: behind the store wall of NL+, House of Tulips, the Amsterdam Bread Company or behind the Starbucks in Lounge 2?

Of course it’s nice when both you and the kids can enjoy your flight in a relaxed state of mind. Fortunately Schiphol Airport has enough facilities to make sure your holiday starts before you board the plane.
