Our USA with kids RV roadtrip takes us to Yellowstone National Park… Almost to Yellowstone National Park..
Today we drive from Buffalo to Cody. We didn’t really plan to spend a night in Cody, but when we found out the drive to Yellowstone is quite long, we decided to stop in Cody as well. I have to say we are pleasantly surprised.
After driving a couple of hours, with Fireman Sam entertaining the kids, we arrive in Cody. Again it feels like walking into a western movie. As we have very good experiences with the kid friendly KOA campgrounds we decide to spend the night at KOA in Cody as well. Unfortunately the lady at the reception has bad news, they are completely booked and it gets worse. She calls all campgrounds in Cody, they are all full. Hmmm what should we do now? Time for a family crisis meeting ;). We have two options: drive to Yellowstone and spend the night somewhere along the way or stay on an overflow site. The overflow site is an offer of the KOA lady. We can spend the night on a tent site instead of an RV site. This means we don’t have any electricity, so no airco, and it’s 35 degrees celsius. As we are afraid driving another couple of hours with the kids won’t make them any happier, we decide to stay at the KOA overflow site. With no airco we rush to the pool, with a special children’s pool, awesome! After a refreshing swim the kids enjoy themselves at the playground and even on the áirpillow. I don’t think campgrounds can get any kid friendlier than this.
Looking at the sign above the road Cody is the “rodeo capital of the world”. As the kids would love to see the cowboys at the rodeo, we decide to go tonight. KOA has a free shuttle service to the rodeo, perfect. When we arrive at the arena Floris wants to have his photo taken with the cowboys and rodeo clowns. Wauw this is quite a happening, tough cowboys everywhere, huge bulls, horses, all kinds of entertainment for the kids and of course hotdogs and pretzels. Before the “show” we look at all the horses and bulls. The kids are totally enjoying themselves.
The rodeo starts with some kind of a parade, the kids are overwhelmed with everything they see and hear. Lotte appears to be a very enthusiastic “clapper”, even clapping on the appropriate moments. After 30 minutes the kids both fall asleep. Quite unexpected as you hear the crowd screaming and clapping all the time. Kev and I are impressed by the horse riding skills of the cowboys. There are even 7 year old kids riding a horse like the have been doing this for 25 years. Impressive! When the show ends the shuttle bus picks us up again and brings us safely to the campground.
This was an amazing and busy day again! We all fall asleep within 5 minutes. Tomorrow we will finally arrive in Yellowstone. I am so excited! I have the feeling Yellowstone could be the highlight of our USA with kids RV roadtrip!
